The other day over the course of a couple hours, three startups, and about 150 yards of driving in between the first and third startup, what started as an intermittent spinning sound developed into a gruesome grinding/crunching noise. After the second startup, we drove the Z down the driveway and out to the road and stopped when I heard the noise again. I got out and looked under the car, and around the front of the transmission (it was already getting dark, so it was hard to pinpoint) I saw a few sparks flying down so we killed it and pushed it back. Half an hour or so later we started it up so someone else could hear it and help us diagnose it and the noise was than ever and had become the crunching/grinding. Whereas before it would take a few moments to hear it, it now starts as soon as the engine starts. What could this be? Flywheel?
